Founded in 1988, the World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina (WAC-WNC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with the mission to educate, inspire, and engage our Western North Carolina community in international affairs and critical global issues.

November 10: “Significance of International Intellectual Property Law for Global Issues”
Inventions, creative works, brands and technology routinely cross national borders, while intellectual property rights are generally granted and enforced under the laws of individual countries. This mismatch is the core problem in international property law. Inherent in intellectual property law is the tension among protecting private property rights, encouraging innovation, promoting international trade, and advancing public interests. How is international intellectual property law central to global geopolitical and economic debates? How does it shape critical ethical issues, such as the balance between corporate patent rights and the public's need for affordable life-saving medicines in developing countries?
Bernard Jacques is a practicing attorney. He taught Business Law to undergraduates at the University of Connecticut for more than twenty years and Central Connecticut State University for over five years. He is an OLLI Asheville instructor for courses on intellectual property.
